House of Cards - Now there’s a perfect greeting card for every ex

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day have come and gone. For divorced parents, these days of acknowledgement can be awkward. If you’re divorced from your child’s mom or dad, you might want to wish them well on “their” day, but  how? Hallmark greeting cards are filled with heart-felt sentiment, but their messages of love and appreciation are rarely appropriate for divorced parents. Enter X Cards.

In 2008 — six years after they divorced — Ken and Wanda Bass founded their unique greeting card company to fill a niche for divorcees and their family members.

When they divorced, their children were young and Wanda struggled to acknowledge Ken for his contributions as a loving father. But there was a problem. Hallmark didn’t make a card that said, “I know you’re angry with me because I don’t want to spend the rest of my life married to you, but I appreciate everything you do for our children, so Happy Father’s Day.”

With no appropriate cards on the market, she made her own. As the years went by, Ken and Wanda were held together by their mutual love and concern for their two sons. Eventually, their acrimony faded, and the lessons they learned about forging communication during the most stressful times in a relationship became a niche business.

"X Cards dare you to break down the traditional mindset," said Wanda in a recent interview with "It's a stepping stone to forgiveness. It’s an olive branch for restoration. We’ve had people who've bought X Cards and ended up getting back (together).”

X Cards don’t just cater to ex-husbands and wives, there are cards for all family members of the extended network effected by divorce, such as ex-mother-in-laws, and cards for ex-boyfriends and girlfriends. And there’s a card for every occasion: Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Birthday, Christmas, Thanksgiving and Graduation.

"It’s not just about him and her and the children,” Wanda said. “Kenny’s mother is like my mother. She still is my mother. And we still have a relationship together."

Although X Cards made headlines lately, there are other options, too. Selections of cards for ex-husbands and wives can be found online on Cafe Press and Zazzle. (Note: Some of their card sentiments are not sincere.)

Of course, you don’t have to purchase a card to open up lines of communication with your ex. Like Wanda, you can create your own. Even when you don’t see eye to eye, providing a kind word or text of acknowledgement and appreciation for good parenting, or sending good wishes during a holiday may go a long way to creating a more harmonious atmosphere for your family. You probably won’t end up becoming business partners like the Basses, but you just may create more peace in your life.
